Superbowl
Sunday, and so much to do. The Spiros were hosting a big-ass party
for the game today (the main reason for coming home), so Stefy
and I had to do our part to help get ready for it. Our task was
to run to the mall and buy some extra bowls for the chili bar
that Teri was preparing for the party, and then get some supplies
to make a board for betting. It was the middle of the afternoon
by the time we got back and finished getting the board set up,
so Stef and I snuck away from ground zero (in the kitchen where
her mom was flipping out) to watch some TV. The guests started
showing up at around 4, so we eventually made our way down to
the basement to mingle and claim our spot in the newly decorated
and furnished movie room for the game. Stef and I played a round
of pool, chatted with some of the people at the party, and chowed
down on her mom’s assortments of chili and other goodies.
By the time the game started and we made our way back to the movie
room at game time, Stef’s brother Justin and his obnoxious
friends had invaded our territory, so we didn’t last too
long in there with all of their irritating banter. We made our
way back out into the main area downstairs where everyone else
was watching the game, but it wasn’t any easier to hear
what was going on, or pay attention to any of the commercials.
Still, we had a lot of fun keeping tabs on our bets, even though
one or two families ended up winning most of the money. Stefanie
and I decided to hit the road right away after the game was over
and the guests cleared out. It’s funny, because part of
the reason we came home on Friday instead of Saturday was so we
could trade cars, leaving Stefy’s busted SUV at home to
get the bumper replaced. Of course, we ended up driving her car
back to MSU anyway, since we figured our truckload of clothes
and other crap wouldn’t fit in the tiny car we would’ve
been driving back in. So, that was pretty much it for the weekend.
I’m about 70% sure about going to Sociology tomorrow morning.
Well, 65-70% is probably more accurate. |

Sleeping
in until 10 is always good. Not doing anything on a Saturday is
even better. Stefy and I killed most of the early morning watching
Kindergarten Cop on TV and eating Cinnamon Toast Crunch. After
getting cleaned up we went downstairs to the big movie room to
play some more Scene It, which I think Stefanie is officially
addicted to. After getting smoked throughout most of the first
game, Stef came from behind to win, and ended up winning two out
of the three games we played. I guess it was just a day for board
games though, because we went upstairs to play some more Sequence,
which Stefy managed to clean my clock at too, so I was a little
tired of getting my ass beat by the middle of the afternoon. We
eventually got our act together and went out to dinner with Stef’s
parents at Bahama Breeze, which I’d never been to before.
Her grandma, sister-in-law, and two nephews met us at the restaurant,
and we had a humungous dinner that lasted at least a couple of
hours. It was pushing 9 or 10 by the time we got back to the Spiro
castle, so Stef and I just settled back into our lazy routine
for the day, watching a bunch of bad TV before going to bed at
around 12:30. It’s amazing how tired you can get after doing
so little. |

Today
was the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day—for Stefy
(I’ll explain in a minute). My morning was actually pretty
uneventful. I made a whole bunch of progress on our new newsletter
at the office, and had a nice, quiet lunch with the Trust Fund
ladies at around noon. It was about a half hour after my lunch
break that things got hairy. I first got a call from Stefy at
around 1 just telling me about her plans for the day. About five
minutes later I got a second call, with Stefy telling me that
she had just gotten into a car accident. So I guess what happened
was some woman rear ended her near the intersection of Bogue and
Grand River, right in front of the Asia House restaurant. I suppose
it was fitting then when the driver of the other car turned out
to be Asian herself. Anyway, Stefy was totally fine, but her car
wasn’t—a totally jacked up rear bumper, that looked
like it was barely holding on. After getting the call, I pretty
much decided to call it a day, and drove out to E.L. to be with
my girl. She was more pissed off than anything, and understandably
so. She’s had a pretty rough week, and this was just the
icing on the cake. I tried to calm her down a bit, as we made
plans for how to handle things. We quickly decided on heading
to her house tonight (a day earlier than we’d planned) so
her parents could decide how to proceed, so it was pretty much
just a matter of killing some time before we could take off after
my haircut appointment at 4. We finally made it to the B.Hills
in Stefy’s car without any trouble, and decided to unwind
with a nice pizza dinner at Goombah’s in Birmingham. We
came back home after eating, and finally got to catch up with
her parents about the car situation, before parking it on the
couch for the rest of the night. Both of us were pretty pooped
by then, so it was nice to settle in for a nice relaxing night
in. |

Well,
I was SUPPOSED to go to my film classes today, but they got scratched
in favor of writing my paper for Film Theory, which is due on
Monday. I know it sounds like I’m slacking a lot—and
I am—but it’s really not as bad as it sounds. Today
was our lecture day, so I really wasn’t missing much anyway.
Honest. Anyway, I met up for a quick lunch with my dad at Jimmy
John’s this afternoon, and then picked up Stefy from her
poetry class in the afternoon. She and I came back and vegged
around the apartment for a while, before I dropped her back off
at the dorm around 5:30. That gave me about an hour back here
to get cleaned up and changed for the show tonight. Stefy bought
us tickets to see “Movin’ Out” at the Wharton
Center with a bunch of her girlfriends. It’s hard to explain,
but the show is basically a live performance of Billy Joel songs,
set to what I’m referring to as urban ballet. There’s
no dialogue—just music and d a whole lotta crazy dancing.
It sounds silly, and it was a little hard to follow since we couldn’t
see the stage that well, but it was actually a lot of fun. The
band was fantastic, and they did a pretty good job of matching
up the songs to the action onstage (or at least, I think they
did—it was hard to tell). Stefy and I got our requisite
servings of ice cream after the show, before calling it a night
at around 11. I know I’ve been such a loser going to bed
so early lately, but I need my beauty rest if I’m gonna
be getting up at 6:30 in the morning. It’s a rough life,
let me tell ya. |

My
first Sociology exam was today. I actually did a fair amount of
studying for it on Monday, so I felt good going in, but there
turned out to be a bunch of questions on the test from readings
that I could swear weren’t on the syllabus. Still, I managed
to get out of class after only about a half hour, so that meant
that I had an extra couple of hours at the office this morning
to work on the newsletter some more. I picked up Stefy on the
way to our respective classes at Berkey this afternoon, but neither
of us were really in the mood to go, so we just decided to play
hooky instead. We spent the rest of the evening watching “Pulp
Fiction” on DVD and making some spaghetti for dinner. We
also managed to watch an episode of The Office, but that was pretty
much it. Skipping class is always a good decision. |

Film
history this morning is a bit of a blur. Then again, I’m
writing this a week later, so I guess that’s understandable.
My day at the office was spent installing the new iWork programs
from Apple and working with those to get some design ideas for
our new newsletter. I must say, for as excited as I was about
it, the new word processing app “Pages” is a bit of
a rip-off—so I guess it’s probably good that I didn’t
pay for it. Film theory was loooooong this afternoon because we
watched “The Best Years of Our Lives”, which is at
least three hours long. It was a really great movie, but my ass
was pretty sore by the time it was over. Nate and Stefy were already
outside Bessy waiting to pick me up after class, so we could get
to Breslin as early as possible for the big Illinois game. We
had a blast, and the Spartans managed to keep it respectable for
most of the game, but Illinois proved why they were undefeated,
and ended up pounding us into submission. Tired and disappointed,
we came back to the apartment, and relaxed with a couple more
episodes of “The Office” before going to bed by 11. |

I
wasn’t feeling Sociology today, so I didn’t go. I
don’t know what it was, but this week just got off on the
wrong foot for some reason. I went into the office for my usual
four hours worth of work, and kept pretty busy all the while.
I started prepping things for the office newsletter that I’ve
been assigned to pull together ASAP. My English Lit class was
pretty ho-hum today, and I was banging my head against my desk,
like usual. Things didn’t exactly perk up during the early
part of the evening, as I spent most of my time catching up on
the Sociology reading I hadn’t done, and getting ready for
our first exam on Wednesday. I did manage to chill out a little
bit though with the first two episodes of the third season of
“Curb”, so that made me feel better. I ducked out
a little later on in the evening to take Stefy out for an ice
cream run (our new tradition), so that put me in an even better
mood. Now it’s time for bed. |
