throat still hurts
Pasted Graphic
Well, my throat is still killing me. I was able to get in to see the PA at Holt Family Practice yesterday, but all he really told me was that I have a mild respiratory infection, and the best thing I can do is keep popping the decongestants and antihistamines and wait it out. His prediction was that I should be over it... in one to three weeks.

Man, I don't think I can take three full weeks of this crap. Honestly, if I could rip my throat out of my neck and not die in the process, I would probably do it. In fact... nah, nevermind.

Anyway, I'm planning to go back to work today, so hopefully I won't be too much of a nuisance while I sit at my desk and hack up a lung. I guess I figure I would just be hacking up a lung if I were at home, so as long as I quarantine myself from the rest of the staff, I might as well get something done so this week isn't a complete waste.

I might be sick, but my girl knows how to cheer me up! This was on the back page of the State News today. What a sweet girl.

Happy Valentine's Day, Stefy!

still sick
Yep, I woke up this morning and felt worse, if that's possible. The doctor squeezed me in at 10AM, and told me I have a mild sinus infection. Since it's a viral thing, the best he could do was recommend some over-the-counter treatments to take care of the symptoms, but this is just one of those things that will have to go away on it's own. Grrr. So, I'm going to stock up on some drugs this afternoon, and try to take it easy today. Barring some ridiculous setback, I'm about 99% sure I'll be back to work by tomorrow.

um/msu, round one: michigan state (duh)
I've said it before. As far as football is concerned, Michigan State's "rivalry" with Michigan is basically nonexistent these days – they pretty much dominate year-in and year-out, and every once in a while we'll steal one from them.

Well, I think the opposite is true of basketball, in that we basically kill them a majority of the time. I mean, we've only lost to Michigan twice, and haven't lost to them at home, since something like 1997. I don't think you can call that a "rivalry" anymore.

Last night basically proved my point. It was a sloppy game, even though for maybe the first time in ten years, Michigan as a whole had more talented players than we did... but the result was the same. What's the difference? Coaching. Tom Izzo is a future hall-of-famer, and Tommy Turtleneck is a future junior high school coach.

Michigan's program hasn't improved at all – despite gathering a halfway decent roster of players for the first time this year – during Amaker's tenure. The situation is almost as pathetic as Michigan State's football program, but the difference is that, while we've had bad coaches in the past, at least we know when to can them.

If you want a good laugh, just check out some of these articles from this morning. It's still possible that UM could beat us on their own court and maybe squeak out a tournament appearance, but the university would be nuts to keep Amaker after this season:

• Rosenberg: Big game was sloppy, yet undeniably intriguing
Wojo: Spartans' victory has no surprises
Rexrode: Parting thought from MSU-Michigan Part I
State News: Duo powers MSU past U-M

top five: love songs
BeachBoys-small ppU2236624x007-small Van_Morrison_1975-small bigfrank-small

Gearing up for Valentines' Day, The New York Daily News just released a list of the 100 Greatest Love Songs. Like any list, I thought some of their choices were good, others... not so much. On the whole, this compilation looks like it was written by someone born in the late-40s/early-50s, since a lot of these tunes are really old.

Anyway, here are my top five favorite love songs:
  1. God Only Knows, The Beach Boys
  2. All I Want is You, U2
  3. Crazy Love, Van Morrison
  4. The Way You Look Tonight, Frank Sinatra
  5. Secret Garden, Bruce Springsteen
Honorable mentions: Something, The Beatles; Unchained Melody, The Righteous Brothers; Fields of Gold, Sting.

Okay, so what did I forget? What are your favs?

yep... i'm sick
Well, I was right. I'm definitely sick. Last night I got home from work, took a hot bath, got out, wrapped myself in a blanket, curled up in the fetal position, and watched TV in a semi-comatose state. Pretty exciting stuff.

I passed out on the couch at around 8:30, and eventually managed to drag myself into bed by 9. While I was completely exhausted, I couldn't fall back asleep once I got in bed. I basically tossed and turned for a couple hours, before finally dozing off around 11.

It was really weird – no matter what I did, I just couldn't get warm. I had on long pajama pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and two heavy blankets... and I was still shivering.

Since I don't have a thermometer in the apartment, I was never able to take my temperature, but I'm about 99% sure I was running a fever, because I woke up a little before midnight in a cold sweat. It seriously felt like my head was going to explode.

Anyway, it was a pretty rough night (to say the least), and out of the eleven hours I spent in bed, I bet I was only asleep for four of them. So, I obviously didn't go into work today, and while I am feeling a little better, I'm not sure how long this will last.

To cheer me up though, my dad sent me a couple articles this morning that helped put me in a more upbeat mood:So yeah, that's it for now. Just lots of sitting around, drinking water, and trying not to die on the agenda for today. Have a good one!

it's official: police tour starts in may!

Oh, yes:

The group whetted fans' appetite for the expected trek on Sunday night, when they performed their breakthrough hit "Roxanne" at the opening of the Grammy Awards ceremony.

Sting, 55, guitarist Andy Summers, 64, and drummer Stewart Copeland, 54, will kick off the tour May 28 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Dates have so far been set for North America only; the band will play Europe in the autumn, and shows in Mexico, South America, Japan, Australia and New Zealand are also anticipated.

Ticket prices will range from $50 to $225, a spokesperson announced at a press conference at Los Angeles' Whiskey A Go Go nightclub. The group also played a few songs for the assembled, including "Message in a Bottle," "When the World Is Running Down, You Make the Best of What's Still Around," "Can't Stand Losing You" and "Roxanne."

I am so there.

getting sick
Ugh. I can tell this is like day one of about a week to ten days of me being sick. I just have that achy feeling, and my throat is all sore... just kinda gross in general. Hopefully I'm wrong and this blows over by tomorrow, but I'm not optimistic at this point.

It's funny, just last week I was thinking about how I haven't been sick since the late summer allergy season, but that streak could be ending soon.

Grrroan.

weekend update

Here's the rundown:
  • Stef and I went to dinner at Max & Erma's on Friday night. Afterwards we headed over to NCG to see Pan's Labyrinth.
  • The movie was really good – honestly, one of the best of 2006. I was really impressed that the theater was so full, considering that the film has subtitles, and has been out for so long (after all, this is Lansing we're talking about). If you get a chance though, I would really recommend seeing it sometime.
  • Slept in on Saturday, and was pretty lazy for most of the morning.
  • Went to Morgan's play at 2PM. We had a pretty nice little cheering section up front, including Elaine and Bob, Pam and her kids, and Kevin and his kids. For a matinee performance, I think they had a pretty good-sized crowd in there. I'm glad that the word got out to so many people.
  • Overall the play(s) (it was a double feature) were really cute. It felt like Morgan didn't have as many lines as she did in "Aesop Says" from last summer, but I can understand how it's hard to give everyone something to say when she's only one of the Twelve Dancing Princesses.
  • Stef and I tagged along with my dad, Kyra, Elaine, and Bob to Mitchell's for an early dinner after the show. I guess it's one of A. Elaine's favorite places, so it worked out well that we could all go out to dinner together while they were in town.
  • As usual, the food was delicious, and we all had a lot of fun chatting over dinner.
  • Stef and I did a little shopping after our meal. There were some things that I liked at J. Crew, but since they just started putting out spring stuff, everything was still way over-priced.
  • We eventually made it back to my place and watched The King of Comedy on DVD, which was fun. I hadn't seen it since my Intro to Film class during my sophomore year, so it was nice to finally watch it again. "Better to be king for a night than a schmuck for a lifetime."
  • Today was really lazy. Lots of bumming around the apartment, watching TV and whatnot. I did manage to do a couple loads of laundry though, so the day wasn't a complete waste.
So yeah, that's about it. I hope everyone had a nice weekend.

top five: favorite police songs
Well, the big Police reunion at the Grammy's is coming up soon, so here are my top five favorite songs of theirs, and a thirty-minute live concert, circa 1979. Enjoy!
  1. King of Pain: I just love the way it builds
  2. Synchronicity I: Gotta love the synth at the beginning
  3. Every Little Thing She Does is Magic: Stef's theme song
  4. Every Breath You Take: Only Sting could make something so creepy sound so sexy
  5. Don't Stand So Close To Me: Ditto
Okay, so what are your favorite Police songs?
